EXPRESSION OF MILK
EXPRESSING BY HAND
The most basic method is to express by hand. It’s time-consuming but needs no special equipment other than a sterile container for the milk. It’s especially suitable for relieving engorged breasts or dealing with sore nipples.
• Hold the breast supported with one hand, using the other hand to storke towards the nipple. Massage the whole breast in this way.
How should I store expressed milk?
Keep breast milk in the fridge in a sterile bottle for up to 24 hours, or use a cooler bag and ice pack. Warm it by standing it in a bowl of warm water. To keep it longer, freeze it in plastic baby bottles and use it within six months. Thaw at room temperature or in the fridge. Never refreeze or reheat.
• Squeeze the junction between nipple and breast. Milk will spurt out. Continue massaging this part of the breast to make the milk flow.
